Description The paper deals with the role of the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teacher in tertiary education. In the Czech Republic, the ESP at the university level is usually taught by teachers having the qualification of general English teachers. The specific knowledge is often gained during the process of teaching depending on the indicative of the teachers or in further education classes. As far as the language is concerned, the teacher acts as an authority, however when dealing with authentic materials of the given field, their knowledge might be limited and their role is therefore shifting towards being a guide or a language consultant. The paper analyses possible difficulties arising from overlaps and transitions between these two teaching roles. It introduces several conflict situations and seeks ideal attitude of the teacher and practical solutions that may improve the quality of the teaching. Last but not least, the paper gives an overview of further education possibilities for ESP teachers.
