Description In 2024, the consumption habits, opinions and attitudes of a sample of Masaryk University full-time students towards addictive substances, addictive behaviour and prevention were investigated. The research was designed as a quantitative descriptive anonymous questionnaire study with the sample recruitment using the snowball method. 1214 complete forms filled out by students from all faculties were obtained. A third of the sample has experience with nicotine use, more than 40 % reported its daily consumption. Electronic cigarettes are used most often, followed by classic cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco or nicotine pouches. 80 % of the sample has experience with alcoholic beverages, half of the respondents drink alcohol several times a month, preferring wine, low-alcohol drinks (e.g. cider), cocktails and beer. 65 % of those surveyed drink coffee or energy drinks, coffee most often several times a week, energy drinks several times a month. 36 % of the sample has experience with illegal substances. Most of them are marijuana or hashish, hallucinogens and dance drugs used several times after the age of 18. 14 % of the sample have ever used prescription drugs without a specialist's recommendation. These were mainly sedatives, hypnotics and analgesics. Kratom and synthetic drugs were used by a fifth of the sample at least once in their lives. Most of them were several consumption episodes. 15 % of the sample spend more than 3 hours a day having fun on the computer, 45 % on the mobile phone. Respondents mostly consider the risk of playing slot machines, online betting and using the darknet to be very high, the risk of playing on a computer or mobile phone to be low to medium, and the risk of using social networks to be medium. Half of the respondents have some health problems in connection with the overuse of modern communication technologies. They most often reported the occurrence of long-term fatigue, sleep and work performance disorders, attention and activity disorders, headaches, neck and back pain, vision problems and long-term mood disorders. Only about 6 % of the sample encountered addiction prevention in a university environment, mainly within the framework of teaching or educational events organized by the University. The most frequent presentations of preventive activities included lectures with discussions, frontal lectures and discussions with an expert. Respondents would particularly like to see activities in which they themselves can participate strengthened. Three-quarters of the sample would like to see the current offer of counseling services expanded either in the premises of the existing counseling center or completely externally outside the University buildings.
