| Description | Sorghum bicolor is currently one of the most important annual forage crops used in ruminant nutrition, particularly in regions with limited water resources and, above all, under drought conditions. Sorghum can be utilized for feed either as fresh forage or in the form of preserved feed, such as silage. However, it is essential to determine its nutritional value—specifically the content of basic nutrients as well as antinutritional substances like tannins, dhurrin, and potentially kafirins. The nutritional value of the forage is influenced by the sorghum variety, the growing site, and cultivation practices. In the case of silage, nutritional value is further affected by the plant's growth stage at harvest and the ensiling method. The nutritional value of both forage and silage can be determined using either wet chemistry methods or NIR spectroscopy, the latter being significantly faster and less expensive than laboratory methods. |
