Citation
Description The twelve Late Neolithic graves and five pits (5000-4500 cal BC) from Čičarovce in Slovakia (Vizdal 1980) offer an opportunity to reconsider the perception of the site in the context of the Upper Tisza region through an anthropological interpretation of the ceramics. In this paper, we will explore the themes of resilience, transformation, and adaptation through a synchronic and diachronic reading of ceramic technical traditions - involving roughing-out, preforming, finishing and surface treatments -, the latter being inherited from one generation to another and the expression of a social group. In the synchronic axis, we will focus on the societal importance of the site and the social status of the deceased by researching the “number” (one or more) of social groups involved in the burial deposits. More broadly, this question allows us to address the sociological landscape in which the Čičarovce site is located. From a diachronic perspective, we will address the issue of cultural filiation by tracing the signal of transmission through time - generation after generation of potters - in order to determine a possible historical continuity between technical traditions at Čičarovce through detailed analysis of ceramic chaînes opératoires. This research is supported by the RES-HUM project (Ready for the Future: Understanding the Long-Term Resilience of Human Culture; CZ.02.01.01/00/22_008/0004593).
