Projekt je zaměřen na objasnění základních principů resilience lidské společnosti v historické perspektivě s využitím dlouhých časových řad a na přenos získaných poznatků do společenské praxe. Tohoto cíle bude dosaženo podporou excelentního výzkumu a rozvíjením spolupráce mezi humanitními a přírodními vědami, jakými jsou archeologie, dějiny umění, antropologie, genetika, geologie, klimatologie, botanika, geofyzika či jaderná fyzika.
