Description The Northern League is a multiregional, macroregional party. Similarly to its regional predecessors and/or founder organisations, Northern League synthesises the elements of populist and ethno-territorial protest. The sources of its political legitimation and electoral mobilisation are of a diverse nature. This diversity has proved a great advantage until the late 1990s. However, it became obvious that the strategy of constant populist delegitimation of the establishment combined with identitary mobilisation had its limits. Northern League could not but to submit to the central bipolar pattern of the Italian party competition and cooperation, including the alliance-building imposed by it. Part of the specific traits of Northern League has been supressed as a result of the above process, including some of the anti-systemic elements in its orientation.
