Description The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of cyanobacterial biomass with the large amounts of cyanotoxins microcystines on the standard avian species Coturnix japonica (Japanese quail) in acute and chronic test. The lyophilized algal cell containing large amounts of microcystins showed acute toxicity for mouse, experimental reports implicated microcystin toxicity to the mass death of wild birds aswell. Significant sublethal effects on modulation of antioxidative and detoxification compounds of cell defensive system (glutathione, glutathione-S-transferase, reductase, peroxidase, P450) aswell as the oxidative stress in an form of lipid peroxidation were observed. Our data are unique and show significant toxicity of microcystine (and/or other cyanobacterial products) on bird model.
