Professor Emeritus at Yale University, a prominent comparative literature scholar, critic, essayist and translator, promoter of Czech literature in English and German-speaking countries and holder of numerous awards, who significantly contributed to the development of scholarship in the area of comparative literary studies.

A proposal to grant an honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in the field of Philological Sciences was submitted by the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. The graduation ceremony was held on 26 November 2014. A brochure introducing the nominee was issued on the occasion of the awarding of this honorary doctorate.
