Description Although the region has been understood as a dynamic process since the 1980s, the focus remains on research of the emergence of (the identity of) region. The subsequent development has not been studied much while its investigation is also needed to develop the knowledge of the concept of a region. Therefore, the article discusses this theme and suggests the usage of a perceptual region concept which can be viewed as both a part of every person’s mental map and a subjective image of region implying the existence of a region. When studying the (de)institutionalization of regions, delimitation of a region by mental mapping must be a means, not a goal. Moreover, it’s necessary to uncover the institutions imprinted in people’s perceptual regions. Some institutions are more powerful than others, thus, they constitute the knowledge of more people, i.e., they play a greater role in the processes of reproduction, transformation, extinction (and also emergence) of a region.
