Project is aimed at the design of new hydrophilic magnetic carriers of spherical shape and uniform size in range of micrometers, which can be used in biotechnological applications. The carriers will be prepared by dispersion polymerization in the presenc e of various magnetic iron oxides. The effect of type and amount of iron oxide added, solvent mixture, monomer concentration, type and concentration of stabilizer and initiator and temperature on the properties of the resulting particles will be determin ed and the polymerization mechanism elucidated. Various affinity ligands, such as enzymes, antibodies, or reactive dyes will be bound to modified magnetic particles. For example, RNase, proteinase, lysozyme, or antibodies against some pathogenic bacteria will be immobilized on the magnetic particles. Activity of immobilized proteins will be tested in the preparation of crude cell lysate, or by means of immunomagnetic separation. Particles with immobilized bacteria will be used in polymerase chain reacti
