Popis Apicomplexa belong to the most monitored group of Protista, comprising exclusively parasites of vertebrates and invertebrates. Gregarines, representing large apicomplexans restricted to invertebrate hosts, have historically been separated into three categories based on their habitat, host range and trophozoites morphology: archigregarines, eugregarines and neogregarines. Their motility depends on mechanico-chemical system and specific cytoskeletal structures (e.g. subpellicular microtubules, intermediate filaments, actomyosin motor). Different modes of their motility could represent specific adaptations to a parasitism in different environments. Present research was mostly focused on motility of two gregarine species parasitizing marine invertebrates collected at the White Sea Biological Station Moscow State University in Russia.
