Popis In international research, the role of the Lithuanian nobility in the early 19th century, i.e. shortly after the division of the Polish-Lithuanian noble republic, has not been considered. In Lithuania, this subject could hardly be dealt during the turbulent 20th century. How did the political culture in Lithuania change after the territories were incorporated into the Russian Empire? The present study, the original of which was published in 1999, explains the changes that occurred in the political consciousness of the Lithuanian upper class in the first three decades after the land was annexed by the Russian tsars. The author, the Lithuanian historian Halina Beresnevičiute-Nosálová has been teaching at the University of Brno for many years. The author chooses a literary starting point for this. She describes in detail the historical context of popular political culture in which Adam Mickiewicz wrote his poems "Grażyna" (1823) and "Konrad Wallenrod" (1828). These works are known as the manifestos of the insurrection, because the poet called for all feelings of political loyalty to be expůoited at the service of patriotism. They undermined the hierarchical connection of feudal loyalty to family values. The author proceeds from the thesis that during the first three decades of the 19th century the political consciousness of the Lithuanian nobility developed a strong imperative of the priority of the nation within the hierarchy of political values, which from then on legitimized the break with all other loyalties . On the basis of ego documents, political writings, poetry and the contemporary Vilnius press, Beresnevičiute-Nosálová describes and explains the change in political consciousness among the Lithuanian nobility and their visions, placing particular emphasis on the analysis of contemporary political rhetoric.
