Popis The Vatican is the only sovereign state in Europe, which has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The loss of the Vatican’s diplomatic relationship would be a definite setback in foreign policy. Taiwan-Vatican relations1 are defined as the Holy See’s relationship with the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan. Its origin is dating back to 1942, when the kuomindang governent was still based in Nanjing.  But in 1952, the Vatican moved the Apostolic Nunciature to Taipei headed by Riberi to continue diplomatic relations with the Nationalist Government (ROC) in Taiwan.   The Vatican is a sovereign state which embodies divine and secular natures. Many non-Catholic Taiwan officials had difficulties in grasping the nature of Vatican and its diplomacy. During Chen’s position as the Vice-president, he proved to be able to effectively deal with complicated Taiwan-Vatican relations through informal channels. For example, during the renewed Sino-Vatican negotiations, professor Chen met with Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, to discuss the future relations between Taiwan and Vatican. While Chen is unlikely to prevent shifting diplomatic recognition to the PRC, he is capable of maintaining strong relationship with the Holy See.
