Popis The paper deals with the ways Czech phoneme /r/ combines with other phonemes when it functions as the syllable nucleus. Although it is not certain what the phonetic difference between the syllabic and non-syllabic /r/ is, if any, it is widely agreed that /r/ functions in Czech as the nucleus of the phonological syllable when occurring between two consonants or between a consonant and the end of the word. These two contexts are examined through their occurrence in Czech words and as to the consonants with which /r/ combines. It is demonstrated that the combinational capacities of the syllabic /r/ are considerably different to those of the (syllabic) vowels, because /r/ can co-occur with fewer consonants and/or their combinations.
