The charred pyrogenic residues of organic matter are natural or anthropogenic geosorbents with high relevance for the sequestration of organic chemicals in the environment. The large-scale application of so-called ‘biochar’ (BC) produced from a variety of organic matter feedstocks has been suggested to improve soil quality in agricultural systems and to assist carbon sequestration for climate protection. However, the interactions between BC, soil and agrochemicals, in particular the mechanisms governing the substantially reduced pesticide efficiency associated to BC application that has been observed preliminarily, are not comprehensively elucidated. A multitude of biogeochemical interactions between biochar, soil and pesticides may occur during simultaneous application that influence pesticide availability and efficiency. In this project, these interactions of charred geosorbents and agrochemicals, exemplified by the yet poorly characterized conazole fungicides (CFs) tebuconazole and epoxiconazole, in soil will be studied. Heterogeneous matrices are represented by a large set of (a) well-characterized biochars (100 samples), (b) arable soils (>70) from AT and CZ and (c) their weathering mixtures. The fate, behaviour and bioavailability of the CFs in the soil/BC envionment will be modelled in simple (batch equilibrium sorption/desorption) and their manifestation monitored in complex (plant and earthworm microcosms, fungal biotransformation) systems.
