Popis Sampling of both sympatric and allopatric barbel populations was performed in 2007-2012. Using 30 microsatellite markers, low level of admixture between B. barbus and B. meridionalis was detected revealing 17 hybrid individuals in four barbel populations. Values of genetic diversity based on nine polymorphic microsatellites found in B. meridionalis populations were lower compared with populations of B. barbus. However, no significant differences in genetic diversity were found nearly between all pairs of populations. Our fish examination for the presence of metazoan parasites revealed that Monogenea represent the most abundant group of parasites in all studied populations, except for three populations. Significant trend towards higher abundance of Monogenea parasites in B. barbus compared to B. meridionalis was detected. However, no relationship between the level of genetic variability in Barbus populations and abundance of these parasites was found. Using molecular data, we found that genetic distances are responsible for the similarity of monogenean communities between different Barbus populations.
