Popis The term syncretism refers to a situation where two distinct morphosyntactic categories are expressed the same. The chapter looks at some of the details that relate to the notion of syncretism as defined above. The first section focuses on how to distinguish between accidental homophony (two different markers, which happen to sound the same) and ‘true’ syncretism (a single marker with multiple meanings). Section 2 investigates the boarders of the term and shows how the notion interacts with the notion of morphological categories. Section 3 discusses theoretical approaches to syncretism.
