Popis Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are still the leading cause of death in Europe (4.4 million deaths/ year, that is, 48% of all deaths yearly). The formidable development and investment in high-technology diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in past decades increased survival. Age-adjusted mortality rates have decreased considerably in many European countries, that is, people are living longer with heart disease. The actual challenge is an optimization of the disabilityfree survival including active participation in social and economic life for patients after cardiovascular events. However, resulting benefit is not automatically achieved through HI-TECH interventions and pharmacotherapy alone but also through cardiovascular rehabilitation (CV-RHB) programs. AHA and AACVPR define CV-RHB programs as: „Coordinated, multifaceted interventions designed to optimize a cardiac patient’s physical, psychological, and social functioning, in addition to stabilizing, slowing, or even reversing the progression of the underlying atherosclerotic processes, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality„ (1). A CV-RHB program is tailored to the individual needs and health condition of the patient and the rehabilitation professional staff should set the exercise program according to the specific health situation and goals (2, 3 and 4). Most cardiac rehabilitation programs in the Czech Republic last about 8 to 12 weeks. During that time, the patient may work with cardiologists, nurse educators, dietitians, physiotherapists specialized in cardiovascular rehabilitation and psychologists.
