Popis In the article - against the background of intercultural models that come into question for central European cities and literatures of modernism - the reception of the early naturalistic volumes of stories by Josef Merhaut (Povídky, Vrah ?, 1890, etc.) and Philipp Langmann (Arbeiterleben!, 1893, among others) is examined. These 'Brno' texts, which are closely related in thematic and aesthetic terms, are received in a strictly monolingual manner by critics (Merhaut in the Czech-language press, Langmann in the German-language press), but the patterns of reception are the same: both are welcomed as young modernists who, however, embody the naturalism of Zola's in a "humane" shape, they seek and find the "soul of the worker". Both are also used by critics to document the continuity of the respective (realistic) literature: Merhaut for the Czech, Langmann for the German. The reception history of Langmann's successful Brno drama Bartel Turaser (1897/8), in which Merhaut played an essential role, however, finally questions the "national literary" staging of separate, monolingual reception lines.
