| Popis | The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microorganisms, has gained significant attention for its profound impact on human health. Alterations in the gut microbiota have been linked to various diseases, from infectious to inflammatory and metabolic disorders. This review article describes faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), a promising therapeutic approach to restore a disrupted gut microbiome, involving transferring stool from a healthy donor to a recipient. While FMT has demonstrated efficacy in treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI), its potential is being explored in other conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Traditionally, faecal material has been administered through invasive procedures like colonoscopy or nasogastric tube. However, with the growing interest in this therapy, less invasive delivery methods, such as oral administration of FMT in acid-resistant capsules, are being developed. Despite promising results, several challenges remain, including the lack of standardized protocols for FMT and regulatory oversight in this field. |
