Popis Establishing a diagnosis after differential contemplation on several diagnostic categories is one of the main physician tasks. Such process is a cornerstone of both medical science and practice in all medical specialties. However, exploring health and illness phenomena with help of seemingly clearcut diagnostic categories is typical not only for medical doctors. Given the influence of medical model, this search for understanding and decision making with regard to intervention is increasingly prevalent in both psychology and psychotherapy. The medical model is influential also in other domains of human activity. Within so called medicalisation process, diagnosis become frequent part of common language and often supercede ordinary words that would better capture subjective experience. Consequences of using and abusing diagnostic categories in explanation of various phenomena of human life, particularly in mental health, have been discussed by many experts. Linguists, sociologists, medical antropologists and psychiatrists as well as psychotherapists themselves critisize the expansion of language of deficit inherent to diagnosis. The influnce of pathologizing discourse in psychology and psychiatry is strongly challenged by theorists and clinicians who draw inspiration from postmodern philosophy and theory of social construction. The article gives overview of those critical attittudes. It also draws attention to several approaches, which are said to surmount the pitfalls of traditional nosological categories.
