Popis The tragedy The Virgin Martyr (1618), a collaborative play by Philip Massinger and Thomas Dekker, was the first professional contribution to the Continental tradition of staging plays about St Dorothy. Shortly after its publication in England (1622) the play travelled with English itinerant actors to the Continent, where it became a popular piece, especially in the German lands. Johann Christian Neuhuber’s 2011 discovery of Johann Georg Gettner’s manuscript Die Heylige Martyrin Dorothea (1691?), which is a German adaptation of The Virgin Martyr, enables a textual comparative analysis which yields a unique insight into the fate of the Jacobean play abroad and into the practice of early modern German acting companies.
