| Popis | Long-term monitoring of remote and extreme environments such as cave systems is necessary for a better understanding of environmental processes but brings many technological and logistical problems. In addition to simple instrumental measurements, collecting wate rsamples for analysis (e.g., drip waters) has its specific requirements. Hence, there is a strong motivation for the development of logging systems. The presented device - dubbed as a Dripmeter - is based on an original general-purpose automatic logger station, which can be equipped with a variety of measuring stations. The presented variant is aimed at cave dripwater study and registers drip rate, water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, air CO2 concentration, barometric prressure, and air particular matter via two measuring stations. The dripwater enters at the top of the first measuring station. Hydrochemical parameters are measured in a series of flow-through cells. Eventually, the water is stored at the bottom of the system in an overflow container (0.5 L) to be regularly sampled by a caver and analysed in a lab. Microclimatic parameters are measured in the second measuring station. Both measuring stations are connected to the Arduino-based logger station, which is placed in a dustproof and waterproof IP65 box and powered by a LiFePo battery. The projected battery life is up to 3 months. Nevertheless, the stations were inspected once a month during the prototyping measurements to check functionality and sinter build-up on probes and to expoert data. Four devices were tested in a case study in the Amatérská Cave (Moravian Karts, Czech Republic). The prototype was tested in the cave from September 2020 to December 2020. The waterproofness was successfully tested as the device was flooded during the high-water levels caused by torrential rains. Thereafter, two Dripmeters were installed in March 2021 and two in April 2021. Additionla logger stations were installed in sois above the cave to monitor temperatures and OC2 levels. Presented datasets show two months-long monitoring of four drip sites. |
