| Popis | This article introduces the different aspects of the multivalent artist Lisl Weil’s (1910–2006) career in interwar Vienna and postwar New York. Taking Weil’s successful yet forgotten career in Austria as a point of departure, it offers new views on how cultural transfers between Austria and the United States developed at the hands of women artists of a generation that has received notably little research. Too young to experience the celebrated years of “Vienna 1900” firsthand, Weil represents a generation of Austrian artists whose careers were established during Austria’s conservative climate of the 1930s. Moving beyond the narrative of a career cut short by forced emigration, the essay shows that Weil’s multivalent practice in interwar Vienna set her up for a new career in the United States, exemplifying the adaptability of creative work in emigration and the importance of “niche media” in exploring new styles and ideas as a crucial aspect of women’s creative practice. |
