| Popis | How did interpersonal relationships function in medieval Europe? At what age did people marry, and how many members did a typical medieval family have? The answer will probably surprise you. Michaela Malaníková, guest of episode 63 of the podcast Středověk (jinak), challenges entrenched assumptions about the past and disrupts traditional notions of what is—or isn’t—a “traditional” family. Large communities, freely arranged marriages, and shared households were perfectly normal in the High Middle Ages. Life together was marked by diversity and variability. And what about the Church? As archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti discover, it was far more permissive than we might assume from a modern perspective. |
