Popis Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation certainly plays a significant role in head and neck carcinogenesis. Increased production of reactive oxygen species and metabolites such as malondialdehyde (MDA) a product of lipid peroxidation and cyclooxygenase activity may in turn induce DNA damage and mutations and, as a result, be carcinogenic. The aim of the study was to investigate relationships between MDA and the oncologic characteristics and survival parameters of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We found significantly different level of MDA in T1-2 and T3-4 patients (p < 0.001) and strong correlation between MDA and T-stages (p < 0.0001). Besides, the level of MDA was significantly elevated in patients who manifested disease relapse during 3 years following the surgical tumor removal (p < 0.01). Our results confirm that advanced disease stages and recurrences in patients with HNSCC are accompanied by an increased oxidative stress.
